Last week, I checked what were the most frequent search terms that resulted in people reading my blog. As expected, since my blog is still in its infancy, the most frequent search term was “discovering ratchet“, no doubt due to all my friends who have not yet saved my blog in their favorites, or subscribed to the email service to follow my blog (hint hint!), and sporadically Google my blog to see if any new amusing disasters have befallen me.

Through highly advanced analysis of the search terms, I learned that in the Googleverse there is some anxiety regarding the public’s perception of accountants, as no less than 5 of the search terms were variations of “accountant stereotype”. Clearly, my blog content is trendy!

To my joy, the terms “ratchet urban dictionary” resulted in 2 people discovering my blog.

But my favorite and most perplexing search term was “stereotypes of ratchet dancing“.

I pondered that concept for several days. What was ratchet dancing, exactly? And was it such a pervasive of a phenomenon that it now had multiple stereotypes?

I surveyed a few of my friends, and their suggestions included:

• “Twerking, a lot of twerking”
• “I am not sure, I am usually too drunk to notice at that point, but it sure sounds fun”
• “Dancing like your joints were ratchets?”
• “An accountant that just passed their professional exam”
• “Backin’ that thang up”

I submit that this video, with its Spandex, Taylor Swift empowering message, mind-boggling choreography and gravity-defying hairdos is the ultimate stereotype of ratchet dancing.

Update: the past 2 videos I put of 1980s aerobics set to Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off have been removed from YouTube due to copyright infringement. I will assume my blog generated too much traffic for those clips. That seems the most likely explanation, definitely.
